A tummy tuck is one of the most common cosmetic plastic surgery procedures being done today. Unfortunately there is one major drawback to this procedure. While patients will be left with a great looking stomach and tighter abs, they will also be left with a scar as the result of the procedure. Mini tummy tucks and lower abdominal procedures are usually less invasive than a full tummy tuck and the scars will be smaller. They can usually be concealed by the patients clothing and many of the scars are actually along the bikini line, the same place most caesarean section scars are located. However, a full tummy tuck scar can reach from the navel down to the pubic hairline and are more visible, especially between three to six months after the surgery. These scars will become less noticeable as time goes on and they will lighten in color somewhere between nine months to a year.It is also very common for full abdominoplasty scars to reach from hip to hip in addition to the aforementioned navel area. A full procedure will have two incisions, one that goes around the belly button and one below it. These incisions are made in order to remove excess fat and tissue, tighten the stomach muscles, and replace the belly button once the procedure is drawing to a close. Because of the nature of the procedure, patients are left with larger scars.Scars from a mini and lower abdominoplasty will not be as extensive as those from a full procedure. Only a horizontal incision is made and there is usually no need to reposition the belly button. The skin may stretch and move the position of the navel slightly, but it is not enough to cause the doctor to take this extra step during the procedure. Mini abdominoplastys occasionally require some liposuction to remove the excess tissue. This could cause the skin to feel differently and maybe even have some discoloration. This is quite normal.Bruising and swelling caused by the surgery can be minimized after the surgery by following the doctors instructions and using special garments that help compress the abdomen to allow proper healing. As long as the patient follows their physicians instruction to the letter, the visible effects of the surgery will fade within a few months. In the meantime, patients can reduce the overall appearance of the scars that are left over from the tummy tuck procedure. Patients should taking products that contain aspirin, avoid smoking, and take other precautions that could delay the healing process. A good cosmetic surgeon will do everything in their power to keep the scar as small as possible, but each patient is different and the amount of work that needs to be done will vary from person to person. If the patient seems to be healing without any complications, their doctor may recommend that they use a cream or ointment that has been specially produced to help minimize the appearance of the scar. The scar will never completely disappear, but by applying this special medication, patients can help them fade in obscurity. If the patient is happy with the results of the surgery, then the remaining scar is a small price to pay.
