American artist, Cindy Sherman was born in 1954 in Glenn Ridge, New Jersey, USA. Unlike conventional artists who dabble in many artworks before claiming international fame, Sherman used a very unusual technique. She acted as a model and projected herself in ways that sent out a strong message about the role of women in the society. The artworks, especially films and conceptual portraits, of Cindy forced and continue to force people to take notice of them.She did her graduation from the State University College, Buffalo, New York in 1976. This was also the time, when Cindy started with her paintings. Shortly afterwards, Sherman moved to New York, at a time when the art world was in turmoil with raging debates on the authenticity and the commoditization of art. Soon disappointed by the creative limits of painting, she opted for photography.Cindy Sherman began her career in art photography with the Untitled Film Stills series. The series comprised of the photographs of Cindy Sherman, where she posed as B-movie actor, paying minute attention to every detail. She is seen in the series in various roles such as that of a prostitute, a homemaker, a dancer, and an actor. Cindy started the project, Untitled Film Stills series, comprising of 69 black & white photographs, in 1977, successfully completing it in 1980. In 1981, Artforum, a magazine of repute asked her to work in their centerfold. For this contract, she did a series of images, where she is seen crouched on the ground in a position of prayer. The editor of the magazine, Ingrid Sischy, rejected these photographs, for the fear of being misunderstood.Afterwards, Cindy began her work on the Disaster and Fairy Tale series. This series reflected a complete change in Cindys art style for the first time, as she was not the model in any of her images. What set the series apart was the rebellious nature of this work where the images had a graphic and a gory representation of vomit and body parts. History Portraits (1988-90) was another famous piece of work by Cindy. Here, Sherman is seen back to her old style of self-playing the model once again. She used prosthetic body parts on her own body, to project herself as various characters from famous paintings. The year 1989 witnessed the very controversial as well as quite appreciated Sex Series of CindysCindy Shermans work extends to the world of cinema as well. Her debut as a director was in the movie Office Killer, starring Jeanne Tripplehorn. In John Waters 1998 comedy, Pecker, Cindy plays a cameo role. Recently, Sherman had an exhibition of her art at the New York Gallery, Metro Pictures. Here she displayed the various photographs of herself in the role of women from California.Cindy, married to Michel Auden (a video artist), is now known as a very successful artist. In 1995, Cindy Sherman received the very prestigious MacArthur Fellowships award. The works of Cindy command fortunes. On an average, Shermans art is sold for $20,000-$50,000 per unit.
